I remain intensely frustrated that there is basically nowhere on the Internet where I can post random shit that comes to my mind without it having to either fit into 280 characters, be read by random relatives and monetised by Mark Zuckerberg, or coming across as far too self-important (hello, Medium) or as pissing into the wind (hello, my blog). Entertainingly enough, Google+ came quite close to filling that role because most of the other people on it were people I knew already - however, that's also indirectly the reason that closed it down.

So how are you all, anyway? I've been busily regressing into the past recently - took first mail and then DNS for my vanity domains back in house (now live with DNSSEC and all those goodies), and remain happy that I took my Apple Watch off in September and replaced it with a G-Shock square. Firstly, it's robust enough that I can probably use it as a knuckleduster or to break car windows in the event of an emergency, and secondly it's strangely nice to be free of the wrist-mounted nagging unit which seemed to regard telling the time as a secondary function.

Anyway. How are you? Who is still on here?

Guess I moved over here from Livejournal just in time for one of my occasional Facebook breaks. They happen from time to time. Every so often something happens which reminds me just how manipulative Facebook are in keeping eyeballs on them rather than anywhere else on the Internet, and I figure it's time for a time out. I would, in all honesty, dump them completely if not for the convenience factor of it being a useful place to share child photos with assorted grandparents.

You've got to admit, Livejournal had a good long run for an online service. I don't think there are many commercial services I held an account on for 13 years which remained effectively unchanged during that time yet still had customers and didn't go the way of Myspace. (Except the WELL, of course, but the Bay Area boomer market isn't going away completely any time soon.)

But now, here I am.

I want to have an interesting conversation. What shall we talk about?

(Translation - I am too lazy to write an essay right now)

I've gone through this old Livejournal and bulk-set all the public posts to friends-only, just so I can look to see if there's any hilarious angsty stuff I'd rather didn't see the light of day. That's why it's a little sparse right now if you're not my fwend.

So, has anything happened to anyone in the last couple of years since I last logged in here?

Some quick notes to explain why I tweeted that the latest Doctor Who was "deeply unsatisfying, predictable, fourth-wall-breaking fan service that would even have embarrassed Billy Hartnell", at the request of [livejournal.com profile] boxcat. Hidden behind a cut so you can avoid the spoilers. Typing this all real fast as it's nearly time for my beddybyes.

In short.. It was all just way too convenient for me.

So what's all the fuss about?

"Why don't we do it in the road?"

Because you'll get run over, and the road is cold, uncomfortable tarmac.
